Casting and Welding

Radiographic non-destructive testing is used to detect flaws in castings and welds. The combination of microfocus X-ray technology and industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT) enables defect detectability in the micrometer range and provides three-dimensional images of low-contrast defects.

Moreover, castings can be measured three-dimensionally using Computed Tomography.

Three-dimensional Microfocus CT of an aluminum casting containing some voids.
Post-analysis Microfocus CT of an aluminum casting: In the three-dimensional, tomographic image, voids are displayed in yellow against the semi-transparent casting in the background.
X-ray image of a laser-pulse weld. Numerous voids as well as the actual fusion zone are clearly visible.
Computed tomographic image of a laser-welded seam joining three parts after several temperature cycles. Left: The fusion zone stands out against the background; two voids are clearly visible. Right: Curls within the fusion zone and fatigue cracks are visible.
